Donation by Munich students

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Line up from Left: Marina Banks, Max Vermeer, Arnor Elvarsson and Fabian Middelmann.

A group of students at the Bavarian International School in Munich, Germany, have kindly donated £125 to CCC.  The students raised this money by participating in a ‘Young Enterprise’ project in which they marketed and sold hooded sweatshirts bearing the ‘BIS’ initials of their school.

Distressed by the suffering of children in DR Congo, the students chose to make a donation in support of our food and education programmes. We are most grateful to these internationally-minded students for making such an effective demonstration of solidarity with our cause.

Some of the students who helped organise the fundraising are shown in this accompanying photo.

Completion of Desks & Classrooms Project

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Our three year project to improve the learning environment at a primary school in Kinshasa has been successfully completed.  See also our blogs of Aug 7th 2007 (Water Cisterns) and May 15th  2009 (Desks & Classrooms).

Work on the Desks & Classrooms project was undertaken in stages over two years, mainly during the Congolese school holidays so as to avoid disruptions to lessons. By the end of July 2009 we had completed the following work at the school:

  1. Supply of 200 new pupils’ desks and 15 new teachers’ desk and chairs;
  2. Renovation of 17 dilapidated classrooms. This included relaying & repairing concrete floors; repairing and repainting walls; enlarging and resurfacing blackboards; and relaying a concrete pathway & steps to classrooms.

The generous grant we received in July 2008 from The Anglo American Foundation covered a large part of the cost of this project, the balance being funded by Fern Hill Primary School, Kingston upon Thames, UK.

We wish to express our great thanks to the Anglo American Group Foundation and to everyone involved at Fern Hill Primary School for their fantastic support for this project!

Presentation to Christ’s School, Richmond upon Thames

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

CCC was invited to make a presentation on 8th May to year 10 pupils at Christ’s School, Richmond upon Thames.  The presentation included a resumé of our achievements to date and our current projects, with special emphasis on our support for the Centre Mére Marie Augustine, the feeding centre, infant and primary school attended by children in a very poor district of Kinshasa.  The presentation was well received by the pupils and was said to tie in well with their current Citizenship coursework project.

Water cisterns project – July 2007

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Thanks to the generosity of Fern Hill Primary School, in Kingston upon Thames, UK, Caring for Congolese Children was able to successfully complete the first of several planned projects at a primary school in Kinshasa, Ecole Primaire Cardinal Malula, Mont N’Gafula.

The school had previously suffered from inadequate water storage facilities, dilapidated toilets and a lack of drinking water. Happily, the pupils and staff now have clean and plentiful drinking water, new toilets and washbasins, thus greatly improving pupil comfort and hygiene standards. We anticipate that this, in turn, will contribute to improvements in the pupils’ educational results.

Fern Hill Primary School, Kingston upon Thames

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Caring for Congolese Children was appointed in July 2006 as Fern Hill Primary School’s principal charity. Additionally, the school has confirmed it would like to participate in a twinning arrangement with a Congolese primary school, Ecole Primaire Cardinal Malula, located in Mont Ngafula, Kinshasa.

Caring for Congolese Children is greatly looking forward to working closely with Fern Hill Primary School regarding fundraising events and the school twinning project which, we are sure, will prove beneficial to the young pupils of both schools.
